ChatGPT SEO is a free, open-source plugin with 27 SEO skills. Install it, run your first audit, and see what it found on a real site.

**ChatGPT SEO is a free, open-source plugin that brings 27 SEO skills into ChatGPT.** You bring a page, a draft or an SEO export. It shows the evidence, explains the problem, proposes a change and tells you how to check that the change worked. The plugin inside ChatGPT is called SEO-pro, the code is MIT licensed, and the repository is [github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo).

I built it. It is the same idea as [Claude SEO](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo), my SEO toolkit for Claude Code, rebuilt as a ChatGPT plugin. It replaces Codex SEO, which lived in the same repository until October 19, 2026. This is a first-party guide, not an independent review: what the plugin does, how to install it the right way, three prompts to start with, and what a real audit returned when I ran it on my own site.

- 27 SEO skills, picked for your task
-   19 shared reference documents
- 9 offline Python commands, no URL fetching
- 0 servers, API keys or SEO accounts to set up
- MIT license, FLOW material under CC BY 4.0

_SEO-pro 0.2.16, released 2026-10-19. Counts from the repository's product and capability docs._

## Watch the walkthrough

In the video I go through the skills, run a live audit of my landing page and turn the result into a PDF report.

One correction: in the video I also mention pasting the repository link into the chat and downloading GitHub's source ZIP. Neither installs the plugin. Use the plugin ZIP upload in the install steps below.

## Key takeaways

- **It is a plugin, not a prompt list.** Install it once and ChatGPT picks the relevant SEO skill for your task.
- **Every finding comes with evidence, a fix and a verification step.** Anything it cannot see stays marked as unknown.
- **27 skills** cover audits, technical SEO, content briefs, schema, sitemaps, hreflang, local, ecommerce, Search Console exports and AI search readiness.
- **Install it from the plugin ZIP**, through Plugins, Add, Upload plugin archive. The GitHub source-code ZIP is not the plugin.
- **It is not in the public ChatGPT plugin directory yet.** Submission to OpenAI is still being prepared, so for now you upload it yourself.
- **It cannot guarantee rankings, traffic, indexing or AI citations.** Nothing can, and the plugin says so.

## What is ChatGPT SEO?

OpenAI describes a skill as something that "packages instructions and supporting resources for a specific task or workflow", and a plugin as "an installable bundle that can include skills and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers" ([OpenAI, Skills & Plugins](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/skills-and-plugins)). ChatGPT SEO is a skills-only plugin: a set of SEO workflows, references and templates that ChatGPT loads when your task needs them. There is no server behind it and no account to create.

The one-line version from the repository: **turn a page, draft or SEO export into a sourced fix plan inside ChatGPT** ([README](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo)). What you bring decides what you get back:

| You bring | You get back |
| --- | --- |
| A public URL or supplied HTML | An audit with evidence, priorities, fixes and verification steps |
| A topic, audience and known product facts | A content brief, outline and source checklist |
| A Search Console export | Calculations and opportunities scoped to the rows you supplied |
| Markup, sitemap XML or locale mappings | A syntax, fact-agreement or consistency review |
| Business, product, keyword or backlink evidence | Local, ecommerce, strategy or site-architecture recommendations |
| An image request | A visual from ChatGPT's own image tool, when your account has it |

## What happened to Codex SEO?

Codex SEO was my port of Claude SEO to OpenAI's Codex CLI ([the original guide](https://agricidaniel.com/blog/codex-seo-openai-codex-cli)). On October 19, 2026 its repository was renamed to `chatgpt-seo` and now holds the ChatGPT plugin instead. The old URL redirects, and stars and history were kept ([transition notes](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo/blob/main/docs/TRANSITION.md)).

Two things matter if you used the old version:

- **The old code is preserved, not continued.** The tag `codex-seo-final` keeps the last Codex version under its original license. The new package does not include the old installers, agent profiles, hooks or provider extensions.
- **Nothing on your machine changes.** Renaming a repository does not touch an existing local install. Back up your data before you remove the old version, and use its own uninstall instructions.

Seven open issues were closed as not planned and twenty pull requests were left unmerged, each with a comment. That is a product change, not a claim that those reports were fixed.

## The 27 skills, grouped by job

You do not call skills by name. You describe the task and ChatGPT loads the right one. Here is what is inside, grouped by the job you want done ([full capability map](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo/blob/main/docs/CAPABILITIES.md)):

| Job | Skills |
| --- | --- |
| Start and route | get-started, seo (routes a broad request to the right workflow) |
| Audit a site or a page | seo-audit, seo-page, seo-technical, seo-sxo |
| Content | seo-content (usefulness, intent, E-E-A-T signals), seo-content-brief, seo-competitor-pages, seo-cluster |
| Markup and files | seo-schema, seo-sitemap, seo-hreflang, seo-images |
| Search data and links | seo-google (Search Console, Analytics, PageSpeed, CrUX exports), seo-backlinks, seo-drift |
| Local and ecommerce | seo-local, seo-maps, seo-ecommerce |
| AI search | seo-geo, seo-agentic (how browsing agents read and use your site) |
| Plan and hand off | seo-plan, seo-programmatic, seo-flow, seo-handoff |
| Images | seo-image-gen (uses ChatGPT's integrated image generation) |

Image generation works differently here. In Claude SEO it runs through an optional extension that calls Google's Gemini models. In ChatGPT it uses ChatGPT's own image tool, in the same chat, with nothing extra to install.

## How to install the ChatGPT SEO plugin

SEO-pro is not in the public plugin directory yet: submission to OpenAI and approval are both still pending. Until then you install it yourself:

1. **Download the plugin ZIP** linked in the [Quick start](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo#quick-start) of the README (version 0.2.16 at the time of writing). On GitHub's file page, choose View raw.
2. **In ChatGPT, open Plugins**, choose **Add**, then **Upload plugin archive**. Upload the ZIP and choose **Add plugin**.
3. **Open the plugin's settings** and choose **Install plugin**.
4. **Choose Try in chat**, or start a new chat with SEO-pro selected.
5. **Paste a public URL or attach a file**, then ask your question.

![The Quick start section of the chatgpt-seo README with the steps to download SEO-pro 0.2.16, open Plugins in ChatGPT, choose Add and Upload plugin archive](https://agricidaniel.com/images/blog/chatgpt-seo-plugin/quick-start.webp)

__Figure 2. The Quick start steps in the README, from the video at 10:25.__

Three mistakes to avoid, from the README and the [install guide](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo/blob/main/docs/INSTALL.md):

- **The GitHub source-code ZIP is not the plugin.** The green Code button downloads the whole repository. You need the versioned plugin ZIP, which has `plugin.json` at its root.
- **Pasting the ZIP or the repository link into a normal chat message is not an install.** If you do not see the upload option, check your workspace settings or ask OpenAI support. The plugin cannot switch on a feature your account does not have.
- **Start a fresh chat after installing**, so ChatGPT does not reuse an older chat's selection.

The upload option and the available tools depend on your ChatGPT account and workspace. No SEO account, API key, Google connection or local Python is needed for normal use.

## Three prompts to start with

The README calls these quests. Copy one, replace the brackets, and attach your evidence.

### Quest 1: inspect a page

```text
Review this page for SEO: [paste your page URL]. Show the
evidence, prioritize the fixes, and draft a better title and
description using only facts on the page. For each fix, tell
me how to verify the change.
```

You get a page diagnosis, title and description options supported by the page, and a check for each fix. Ask for this structure, and the workflow is built around it: evidence observed, finding, proposed change, verification, and anything still unknown.

### Quest 2: brief a writer

```text
Create an SEO content brief about [topic] for [audience].
Include the search intent, outline, facts we need to source,
and useful internal links from my site: [site or URL list].
Label ideas that lack measured search data as planning
assumptions.
```

You get a writer-ready brief and the evidence it still needs. It is told not to invent search volumes or claims about your audience.

### Quest 3: read a Search Console export

```text
Analyze this Search Console CSV for [date range]. Find pages
worth reviewing and explain clicks and CTR. Check the
columns and date coverage before calculating anything. Flag
missing context before drawing conclusions.
```

Export the performance report from Search Console and attach it. You get calculations for the rows you supplied, page and query opportunities, and the next checks. An export is a snapshot: it does not give the plugin access to your account.

Longer prompts work too. Name the page types you care about (blog posts, service pages, money pages), the checks you want (schema, robots, AI readiness), and the format you want back.

## A real audit: what it found on my site

In the video I ran SEO-pro on the landing page of [claude-seo.md](https://claude-seo.md/), the site for Claude SEO, with the model set to GPT-6.1 Sol at medium effort. This was the prompt, with SEO-pro selected (lightly cleaned up):

```text
https://claude-seo.md/ Please analyze in full the current website. Just do an SEO
audit of the current landing page only. Review gaps,
opportunities, GEO, AI SEO, and everything else needed to
ensure that we have full-on visibility and people can find
us both on Google and on ChatGPT.
```

![Left, PageSpeed Insights for claude-seo.md with WebMCP schemas, Cumulative Layout Shift, llms.txt and ai-catalog.json checks passing. Right, ChatGPT running the SEO-pro audit prompt and working for 46 seconds](https://agricidaniel.com/images/blog/chatgpt-seo-plugin/audit-prompt.webp)

__Figure 3. The prompt running next to PageSpeed Insights for the same page, from the video at 6:50. The page already passed those PageSpeed checks. The audit looked at content, facts and structure as well.__

It worked for 4 minutes 40 seconds, browsing the page, searching the web and running commands. It said what it audited (the homepage on October 19, including HTML, rendered content, metadata, structured data, crawler policy and discovery files) and that it changed nothing. Then it listed what already worked, with evidence:

-   The homepage returns HTTP 200 with a self-referencing canonical and `index, follow`.
- HTTP and www variants resolve to the preferred HTTPS address.
- Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed in robots.txt.
- The title and description clearly identify the product, and all three `<img>` elements have alt text and dimensions.
- Six JSON-LD blocks parse successfully.

And what it said to fix:

- Product counts conflict between sections of the page.
- The page gives outdated guidance about FAQ rich results.
- Some demos are dated, and audit examples need more context so heuristics do not read as universal SEO rules.
- The mobile menu does not expose whether it is open or closed.
- A fresh PageSpeed run returned an error, so performance and Core Web Vitals stayed unknown.

![ChatGPT's SEO-pro answer after working for 4 minutes 40 seconds: the landing page has a sound technical foundation, the biggest opportunity is consistent product facts, and a list of what is already working](https://agricidaniel.com/images/blog/chatgpt-seo-plugin/audit-result.webp)

__Figure 4. The audit answer, from the video at 12:15. Its main finding was not technical: make product facts, advice and proof consistent so that search engines and AI systems can trust each section on its own.__

Then I asked for a minimal, non-technical PDF in the site's own style. Two minutes later it had reconfirmed the page was unchanged and produced a four-page report. Its summary was "A strong foundation. Clear fixes still needed." with a coverage table that is honest about what it could not see:

| Area | Status |
| --- | --- |
| Search access | Confirmed |
| Page foundations | Confirmed |
| Images and page data | Checked |
| Reader experience | Improve |
| Facts and credibility | Improve |
| Actual visibility and speed | Unknown |

![The four-page PDF report for claude-seo.md open in ChatGPT, with the coverage table: search access and page foundations confirmed, images and page data checked, reader experience and facts and credibility to improve, actual visibility and speed unknown](https://agricidaniel.com/images/blog/chatgpt-seo-plugin/pdf-report.webp)

__Figure 5. The PDF report, from the video at 17:52.__

"Unknown" for visibility and speed is the right answer. It had no Search Console data and no real-user speed data, so it did not guess. Attach a Search Console export and it can work out clicks, CTR and position for the rows you supply. For real-user speed you would need a CrUX or PageSpeed export. And as with any model: review its work before you change your site.

## What happens inside ChatGPT

You choose a task and supply its evidence. ChatGPT loads the relevant skill and its references, uses the tools available in that chat, and connects each finding to a fix and a verification step ([README](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo#what-happens-in-chatgpt)).

- **Public browsing** inspects pages anyone can open.
- **Account data** comes from exports you upload, or from a read tool you authorize separately. There is no built-in Google connection.
- **Nine bundled Python commands** can inspect HTML, XML, CSV, JSON and image headers when file execution is available. They use only Python's standard library and do not fetch URLs. Without execution, the workflow says which checks it did by hand.

## Limits and your data

| It does not | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Guarantee rankings, traffic, indexing, rich results or AI citations | No tool can. Missing evidence stays unknown |
| Include a hosted MCP server, OAuth client, crawler or paid data | Nothing to connect, and no paid data service to buy |
| Read your Google accounts | Upload an export, or authorize a read tool you already have |
| Send your inputs to me | The package has no publisher server or telemetry |
| Publish fixes on its own | Publishing or account changes need the right tools and your explicit go |

A valid schema check is not the same as rich-result eligibility. JSON syntax, agreement with visible facts, Schema.org validity and Google's eligibility rules are separate checks, and the report says which ones it actually verified.

On AI search, Google's own guidance is plain: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). So the GEO and agentic skills work on the same foundations: crawlable pages, clear facts, structured data that matches what people see.

Your data: ChatGPT and any tools you authorize process your files under their own settings and policies. Share only what the task needs, and remove credentials and personal data from exports first ([privacy statement](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/chatgpt-seo/blob/main/plugins/ai-marketing-hub-seo/legal/PRIVACY.md)).

## Who it is for

- **ChatGPT users who never used Claude SEO.** The Claude SEO workflows, adapted for the assistant you already use.
- **Site owners and small teams** who want to audit and fix their own pages before they pay someone to do it.
- **SEO practitioners** who want evidence-first answers they can check, in a format they can hand to a client or a developer.

If you already live in a terminal, [Claude SEO](https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo) for Claude Code adds subagents and optional data integrations. For a broader comparison of free options, see [free SEO audit tools](https://agricidaniel.com/blog/free-seo-audit-tools).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can ChatGPT do SEO for me?

With the SEO-pro plugin, ChatGPT can audit a page, write a content brief, review schema and sitemaps, and analyze a Search Console export you upload. Each finding comes with the evidence, a proposed fix and a way to verify it. You still decide what to change, and you should review its work first.

### Is the ChatGPT SEO plugin free?

Yes. The code and workflows are MIT licensed and free to use. The adapted FLOW material inside is licensed CC BY 4.0. You need a ChatGPT account that can upload plugins.

### Is ChatGPT SEO in the ChatGPT plugin directory?

Not yet. It has been prepared for OpenAI review, which requires a verified developer identity, automated checks and approval. Until it is approved, install it by uploading the plugin ZIP from the repository.

### How do I install the ChatGPT SEO plugin?

Download the versioned plugin ZIP from the README. In ChatGPT open Plugins, choose Add, then Upload plugin archive, add the plugin, open its settings, choose Install plugin, then Try in chat. The GitHub source-code ZIP and a pasted repository link do not install it.

### Do I need an API key or Python?

No. Normal use needs no API key, no Google connection and no local setup. The nine optional Python commands only run where ChatGPT has file execution.

### What is the difference between ChatGPT SEO and Claude SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is adapted from Claude SEO's workflows. Claude SEO runs in Claude Code, with subagents and optional data integrations. ChatGPT SEO runs inside ChatGPT as a skills-only plugin, uses ChatGPT's own browsing, files and image generation, and needs no setup beyond the upload.

### Does it guarantee rankings or AI citations?

No. It cannot guarantee rankings, traffic, indexing, rich results or AI citations, and anything it has no evidence for stays marked as unknown.
